Transcarpathia is the westernmost part of Ukraine and a region that, due to its shared history within Czechoslovakia, remains connected to the fates of many Czechs. However, the ties between the inhabitants of Transcarpathia and the Czechs and Moravians are much deeper, reaching back to Great Moravia. We were part of one state even during the Austro-Hungarian Empire. ***** Transcarpathia is a matter close to the author's heart. His first wife came from there, with whom he had the opportunity to get to know this still mysterious region in detail. He followed in the footsteps of Nikola Šuhaj, bringing new, significant insights based on acquired documents. ***** Especially valuable are Syruček's research into Transcarpathian history, inquiries into the origins of the Rusyns and the Rusyn language, the life of Transcarpathians during Masaryk's First Republic, and comparisons with post-war history when this region was annexed as the Transcarpathian region to the Ukrainian Soviet Republic. Before that, Subcarpathian Rus experienced a millennium of domination by the Hungarian kingdom.
