Description
This Czech-language autobiographical prose work looks back on Lydie Romanská’s childhood and earliest youth in the Ostrava region during the 1940s and 1950s. She assembles fragments of memory from the perspective of a child and later an adolescent girl, interweaving numerous experiences with portraits of people around her, descriptions of family life, and the hardships of the post-war period, which was soon profoundly transformed by the newly established political dictatorship. Romanská’s writing goes beyond conventional memoirs, addressing personal intimacy and adolescence with openness. She makes full use of her talent for observation to offer a vivid account of life at the time. The narrative is accompanied by images of a workshop similar to the one owned by her father, where she spent many happy moments of her awakening to life.
