His father – along with his siblings – founded a shoe company in 1894, which over the years grew into a global conglomerate, expanding into more than 36 sectors and employing thousands of people. ***** Tomáš Baťa junior was deeply affected by his father's tragic death just before he turned eighteen. He was still very young to take over such a large enterprise, so the management of the company was assumed by his step-uncle Jan Antonín Baťa. However, at the age of just twenty-four, he took on the project of building the Canadian town of Batawa, without knowing at the time that it would become a future refuge for the entire Baťa company.
