Description
It is shortly after World War II, and London is timidly awakening from the lean war years. The residents of London's "women's homes," a charitable club called May of Teck, are breathing in freedom and yearning for new clothes, new men, and a new life. However, the metropolis remains marked by the scars of war, goods are rationed, and the girls realize that evil thrives even in times of peace. In the novella, the author draws from her repeated stays at the Edinburgh women's boarding house, Helena Club, which she was forced to join due to a lack of funds. The prose captures the efforts of a group of young women to secure their independence and navigate a new world – while Spark addresses serious themes of morality, religion, and poetry in the form of a social comedy, demonstrating her unique economy of expression, the art of discreet suggestion, and a sense of humor and tragedy devoid of sentimentality or pathos.
