Description
The author guides readers through the last fifty years of Czech, European and world history from the perspective of an eyewitness to decisive events and an interviewer of their principal participants, many of whose views have never been published before. Milan Syruček was a guest at the White House in Washington, the Kremlin in Moscow, the Élysée Palace in Paris and Prague Castle, as well as a direct participant in demonstrations and public rallies ranging from the Paris boulevards to Wenceslas Square. These unique perspectives on recent history are presented in a vivid literary style, offering glimpses behind the scenes of events such as the Helsinki Conference and the American-Soviet summits. His friendship with Alexander Dubček provides insight into moments of the Prague Spring that have not previously been described. The author goes beyond his interviews from 1968, following the lives of his companions up to the present day, including his last visit to France in December of the previous year and an extraordinary, unexpected encounter in a church near Paris’s Gare du Nord. The contents are in Czech.
