Description
Oberleutnant Otto Carius (*May 27, 1922 – †January 24, 2015) was one of the most successful German tankers during World War II, with over 150 destroyed Allied tanks. He joined the Wehrmacht as a volunteer in 1940 and was soon assigned to armored troops, starting as a loader on the Czechoslovak light tank Praga LT vz. 38. From 1943, he served in the 502nd Heavy Tank Battalion on heavy Tiger I tanks on the Eastern Front. For his wartime achievements, he received high decorations, including the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross 1939 and later oak leaves. In the last year of the war, Otto Carius commanded the 2nd Company of the Heavy Tank Destroyer Battalion 512, equipped with Jagdtigers. After the war, he pursued a career in pharmacy and owned a pharmacy named 'Tiger Apotheke' in Herschweiler-Pettersheim.
