Description
The 1980s are slowly coming to an end. In Central and Eastern Europe, one communist regime falls after another, but in Czechoslovakia, the communists still hold onto power. Society is dissatisfied, but only a handful of people express their dissent. Besides opposition movements, the strongest protest voices come from students who take to the streets. They demand freedom and respect for human rights. Nothing fundamentally changes until the fateful Friday, November 17, 1989... Siblings Anna and David from Jihlava encounter the regime's dullness every day. Anna gets into university in Prague, where she meets like-minded people. She joins them in protests, triggering a series of events that will change the lives of her entire family. The comic "Batons and the Gentle Revolution: The Story of November 1989" aims to convey to younger generations the pivotal events of our modern history that ended the 41-year period of communist dictatorship. The book is supplemented with a small glossary of historical terms used and a detailed overview of the events of 1989 in Czechoslovakia from the so-called Palach Week in January to the election of Václav Havel as president of the republic at the end of December.
