Who doesn't know the image of a small crying girl burned by napalm, which changed the world's public opinion on the Vietnam War and became the impetus for turbulent protests? Who doesn't know the portrait of a charismatic man with an impassioned expression under a military beret, who has been a symbol of revolt for young people in various countries for decades, appearing not only on T-shirts, posters, mugs, and badges, but also tattooed on the arms of girls and the chests of men? And who doesn't know the footage of the arrival of Nazi occupation troops in Prague, where fists rise from the crowd of onlookers, foreshadowing World War II? Or the image of the atomic bomb explosion over Hiroshima, which ended that war? But also the photograph of the divine Marilyn with the telling title Butterfly, which has been an exciting erotic symbol since the mid-20th century? All these and other photographic icons, embodying significant events, phenomena, and personalities, are part of our collective memory. In the one hundred and eighty years since the invention of photography, a nice series of them has emerged. They are part of our consciousness. A sort of pocket guide to history – whether we remember the names of their authors or not. Moreover, these famous images have another, hidden face.
