The face of the commander of the school tank battalion was gloomy today. It was no wonder. After returning from the Mimoň shooting range, all the barracks roads were blocked by tanks and transporters with white stripes. And in his office, he was greeted at the pried-open bar by a stocky Russian general in field uniform with an apologetic smile: "No izvini továryšč palkóvnik, my uže vsjo vypíli!" The novella Finally War, Man..! captures fictionalized excerpts from the diary of a soldier who had the misfortune of serving two years in the people's army, unfortunately at a time when this army proved to be completely unnecessary. It was August 1968. Coincidentally, the same tank battalion had been served by the writer Josef Škvorecký sixteen years earlier. He wrote about his famous book Tank Battalion that it is not a literary satire, but merely an attempt to capture his own experience. And so it is.
