Description

The area around Blansko is inextricably linked to the Moravian Karst. Originally, people referred to it as Moravian Switzerland due to its poetic nature, and especially at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, it became a popular destination for visitors not only from Brno but also from more distant places. The term Moravian Switzerland defines a strip of land stretching from Sloup to the Brno district of Líšeň. Here, we can find everything that nature has to offer, whether it be karst formations, natural monuments, or various species of flora and fauna that occur right here in this beautiful place in southern Moravia. It is also a site of much research, whether by speleologists or historians, which has allowed for insights into the depths of the karst caves and an understanding of the life of the early ancestors of humans in this territory. The book by Blansko postcard collector Milan Sýkora and photographer Milan Šustr titled 'Moravian Switzerland in Old Postcards' offers not only nature but also works created by human activity. Alongside the towns of Blansko, Adamov, and Bílovice nad Svitavou, we find other human settlements in Moravian Switzerland. In the old postcards, we can admire Nový hrad or the castle in Rájec, pilgrimage sites in Vranov, Křtiny, and Sloup, ironworks, or the railway line with originally ten tunnels...
