The monograph addresses a new sociological-religious topic, which it proposes to label as religious shock. It does so from the perspectives of religious studies, theology, and ethics, through the eyes of an independent traveler confronted with different cultures and religions. Religious shock is a psychological, spiritual, or existential jolt caused by an encounter with a different, unknown, or yet uninternalized religion or religious cult, which can affect an individual usually during rapid cultural changes while traveling, but it can also impact a social group or even an entire culturally-religiously defined area, often during larger waves of migration stemming from a different cultural-religious region. In the book, we propose three basic phases and manifestations of religious shock: 1. shock, the experience of something unexpected, special, extraordinary in relation to one's home religion (or atheism), distinguishing between positive and negative shock; 2. enchantment, that is, the experience of something seductive, appealing, at first glance 'the right spiritual path,' followed by sobering up and escape, or conversely, sobering up and a rational deepening of interest; 3. disgust, in other words, the religious experience perceived by the shocked individual as foolish, absurd, cruel, disgusting...
