"Sculptor, painter, and book graphic artist Zbyněk Sekal was born in 1923 and lived in Czechoslovakia until his emigration in 1968. From then until his death in 1998, he lived and worked in Austria. He began photographing in the second half of the 1960s, but only enlarged films as 'contacts.' These photographs have such a strong visual affinity with his official sculptural work that the idea arose whether they served him as photographic sketches for material reliefs, sculptures, and even for book cover designs. The book 'Zbyněk Sekal: Book Covers – Photographs – Collaged Images' confronts these miniature photographs, his book covers, which Sekal dedicated his life to, and collaged images, reliefs. This comparison creates a new, more holistic view of Sekal as an artist and Czech creator working in the shadows of his time. Thus, it is an art-historical discovery of exceptional quality.
