Description

The book of Finnish fairy tales presents a selection of Finnish stories with themes that are originally Finnish, and naturally also migrating. However, all themes are based on typically Finnish fresh motifs that will undoubtedly captivate both young and adult readers. Their naturalism distinctly enriches the folk storytelling art. The editor of the Finnish original retained the text recorded according to the tales of the storytellers - mostly in the second half of the 19th century, but we also discover elements signaling the beginnings of the 20th century - in almost unedited original form, including a multitude of verbal, grammatical, and stylistic slips, often on the verge of comprehensibility. This was done to preserve the ways of its original presentation: folkness, dialects, archaisms, and how individual tales emerge from the social backgrounds of their storytellers. The translation naturally strives for a clearly comprehensible text, while maintaining today’s folkloric or poetic expressive means. The original is carefully compiled according to Aarne-Thompson's fairy tale typology, and to a large extent, this typology is preserved in the Czech translation as well.
