Although he was born in the Upper Austrian Haag am Hausruck, he soon returned with his family to Bohemia, first to Sušice, where his father worked as a general practitioner. He spent his childhood in Žichovice near Rábí. He did not attend school because there was none in the village, and the other schools were far away. Only when his father, the estate doctor of Prince Lamberk, realized that his son was neglected did he send him to Stříbrné hory (later Nalžovské hory). He began studying at a gymnasium in Klatovy and completed it in Písek, then enrolled at the medical faculty of the University of Vienna, but after 10 semesters, he was forced to take a job due to difficult family circumstances. He first worked as a tutor in Žamberk, then as an editor of a magazine. Finally, from 1878, he was a professor of German and French language in Plzeň until his retirement in 1908.
