The Hornblower saga is among the best naval novels. It takes place during the times when Britain struggled for its existence against Napoleon's France and its allies. The entire cycle consists of ten completed novels, one unfinished, and several standalone stories published collectively under the title Mr. Midshipman Hornblower. These are adventure novels in which we gradually follow the main character Horatio Hornblower from his cadet years, through a successful career as a naval officer, to his retirement. In the Czech translation, four novels from the saga were published in the late 1940s (Happy Return, A Ship's Officer, With Flying Flags, and Commander of the Squadron). We are now introducing the Czech translation of the first part to the book market. The Czech translation of the other parts of the cycle will follow. Besides this series of novels, Forester is generally known primarily for the famous film adaptation of his novel The African Queen (1935, filmed in 1951 with Humphrey Bogart and Katharine Hepburn). The story of the three 'middle' parts of the saga was also filmed that same year, starring Gregory Peck.
