Description
This book presents the Tibetan Buddhist Diamond Way view of the dying process and explains what happens after death, when the mind processes all the impressions it has experienced before being reborn into human or another form of existence. Death remains a mysterious black hole in society’s collective consciousness, making knowledge, experience and understanding of this subject extremely important. The book is therefore not intended only for Buddhists, but is written to help anyone understand how to support friends or family members during the dying process. It also offers deeper, practical information about methods for learning to work with the mind during dying and death. The nine chapters place death and dying in the context of modern science, introduce Buddhism and its teachings, describe the dying process and ways of improving the conditions of death, and explain what happens to the dying person. They discuss how to help someone who is dying, how the process of dying and death itself can be used for development, and the Buddhist teachings on intermediate states, or bardo. One chapter examines the practice of consciousness transference, or phowa, including its various forms and possibilities. The book also recounts the teachers Lama Ole Nydahl met and how they died, and concludes with an account of the death of the 16th Karmapa, Rangjung Rigpe Dorje.
