Description
"When I decided to write a story about the educated schoolboy Pihoun from the suburbs of Beroun, my intention was for the novel's hero, although a fictional character, to move in an authentic environment, surrounded by authentic people living at that time. The stage on which the story takes place is the town of Beroun and its immediate surroundings in the realities of the 1920s. How in the evening, after tending to the horses, they would share news from the world over a good drink with the locals, who would in turn tell them what was new in their lives. I would be pleased if this little book encouraged readers to pause for a moment and, together with me, look back at the vanished world of roads lined with trees and the world of vaulted local pubs in inns..."
