Description
The theme of the book is the fates of people during one of the difficult periods of modern Czech history - the occupation of our country by the so-called allied forces of five states of the then Warsaw Pact in August 1968. The setting of the novel is a military unit in a garrison in South Moravia, where the commander of the regiment, Válek, faces the fateful problem of whether the entry of foreign troops in August 1968 was international assistance or occupation. The book is not a historical document; it rather records the fates of people in a motorized infantry regiment, the faces of those who persisted in the belief that it was an occupation and the faces of those for whom the intervention was an opportunity to gain a position of power. The episodes in which the author guides the readers through life in the unit provide insight into an environment that they may never have encountered in literary or real form.
