Johan Cruyff was one of the greatest players in football history. He became synonymous with total football, and his philosophy of the game is legendary. In his autobiography My Philosophy of Football, Cruyff tells the story of his life from street football to joining Ajax at the age of ten, through three victories in the European Cup, to his transfer to Barcelona in 1973 for a record sum. This was followed by winning La Liga in his very first season and the Ballon d'Or for the best European player. Overall, Cruyff won this award three times and led the Dutch national team to the World Cup final in 1974. After retiring in 1984, he became an extraordinarily successful coach at Ajax and then Barcelona, leading them to their first Champions League title in the club's history. In 1999, Cruyff was named the best European footballer of the century and the second-best footballer in the world, right after Pelé. Later, he founded the Cruyff Foundation, aimed at providing children with the opportunity to play sports.
