Description
THE BOOK OF FIVE RINGS is a medieval work on the way of the sword - kendo, authored by the legendary Japanese samurai. The legendary swordsman Miyamoto Musashi (1584-1645) was born in medieval Japan, which was striving to recover from more than four centuries of internal conflicts, battles, and chaos. The tradition of emperors ruling as absolute divine rulers practically disappeared in the 12th century, and although each subsequent emperor remained the official head of the country, his power was significantly reduced. Since then, Japan experienced almost continuous civil war among provincial lords, militant monastic orders, and bands of robbers, fighting each other for land and power. In the 15th, 16th, and even 17th centuries, lords known as daimyo ('great names') built massive stone castles to protect their own and their domains, and new towns gradually began to emerge behind their walls. These wars, of course, limited the development of trade and impoverished the entire country.
