Description
This novel is the first volume of Yukio Mishima’s tetralogy The Sea of Fertility, which gained widespread acclaim for its exceptional scope, distinctive fictional world, and unique vision. Set after the death of Emperor Meiji in 1912, it portrays a world of superficial Westernization, a declining court aristocracy, and a new social elite descended from provincial samurai families. Against this background, Mishima develops the story of Kiyoaki, a dreamy young man from an old samurai family, and Satoko, the beautiful unmarried daughter of a court family. Their relationship becomes the setting for a tale of intrigue and manipulation that captures the profound and complex contradictions surrounding Japan at the beginning of the twentieth century.
