Paní Bovaryová – Flaubert Gustave (2024)

An illustrated edition of the world-famous novel with images by the renowned Spanish painter Emilio Grau Sala (1911–1975), supplemented by a detailed critical study of the novel and for the first time in Czech, a published record of the court trial against Gustave Flaubert, in which he faced charges of offending "public and religious morality and decency" due to the publication of the book. ***** The novel Madame Bovary (1857), set in a provincial town in Normandy and telling the story of beautiful Emma, married to a country doctor, who tries to compensate for her dissatisfaction in marriage by escaping into a world of dreams and romantic adventures that ultimately lead her to ruin, is very well known to Czech readers – it has been published in our country about thirty times (first in 1892) and has seen nearly ten translations. However, our edition is a unique endeavor in the context of Czech publications for several reasons. Firstly, because in addition to the text of the novel itself, it allows the Czech reader to become acquainted with one of the most famous court trials against a writer in the history of literature, namely the lawsuit against Flaubert for offending "public and religious morality and decency," which he allegedly committed by publishing his novel.
