A new edition of one of Dickens's peak novels, considered the author's most formally perfect work, equipped with dozens of illustrations by three of the most famous English illustrators of the 19th and early 20th centuries, with which Dickens's work is inseparably linked. A Tale of Two Cities, set in London and Paris before and during the Great French Revolution, was first published in 1859. It was originally serialized in the magazine All the Year Round, which was founded and edited by the author himself. Against the backdrop of the tumultuous fates of the central characters – French émigré Charles Darnay, Doctor Manette, his daughter Lucie, and clerk Jarvis Lorry – the author presents an extraordinarily powerful and emotional picture of dramatic revolutionary times when arbitrariness, violence, mob frenzy, and eventually terror became the norm. The titular two cities, where the story takes place, are Paris and London, with the English classic depicting Paris as a center of inhumanity and perverse frenzy, while London, despite its dark sides, remains for him a city of reason and enduring hope for a normal life.
