An illustrated edition of one of the most original and entertaining novels of the 19th century, unparalleled in the history of literature, in a congenial translation by Hanuš Karlach and with illustrations by Michail Gavričkov. Hoffmann's The Life Opinions of the Cat Murr, considered the pinnacle of the author's work and a seminal opus of late German Romanticism, first saw the light of day two hundred years ago, but it only received full recognition, appreciation, and even enthusiastic reception in the 20th century. E. T. A. Hoffmann was ahead of his time and created a work that is truly unique in its form and intricate composition: Hoffmann himself appears in it as the publisher who complied with the wishes of his friend and decided to publish the memoirs of a certain 'young author of great talent,' who is in fact a cat named Murr. It soon becomes clear, however, that the learned cat accidentally mixed pages from another text he discovered at his master's home into his manuscript, namely from a book about the life of the genius composer and conductor Johann Kreisler. These pages, which the cat used partly as a writing pad and partly as a drinker, were also inadvertently printed, and thus, in the final form of the work, two independent plot lines seem to intertwine by mistake – satirically...
