Description

12 Years a Slave is a novel by Solomon Northup from 1853 that tells the story of a black man born in New York who was kidnapped in Washington D.C. in 1841 and sold into slavery. He worked on plantations in Louisiana for twelve years before being freed. The story was adapted into a film and received numerous awards. The book offers an interesting dive into the history of slavery in the USA, the consequences of which, along with pervasive racism and enslavement, have lingered in the United States until recently. For example, let us remember the Tuskegee experiment, which took place as late as the early 1970s. However, similar experiments conducted by the United States were already carried out in Guatemala from 1946 to 1948. And surprisingly, many even during World War II. But that's a topic for another book.
