Description

In response to the growing threat from Nazi Germany in the mid-1930s, Czechoslovakia began building a massive fortification system modeled on the already legendary French Maginot Line. It was intended to at least partly offset the disadvantage of the country’s extremely long state borders. The Orlické Mountains and the Náchod region, covered in this second volume of the successful Border Fortresses series, were among the key areas of Czechoslovakia’s defenses from the earliest plans for fortification. Between Zemská brána and Červený Kostelec, 155 heavy-fortification structures were to be built, including 126 isolated infantry blockhouses, one artillery observation post and 28 structures forming the Hanička, Skutina, Dobrošov and Jírova hora artillery fortresses. Of these, 103 structures were assigned to construction companies and 86 had actually been concreted by September 1938. This Czech-language book tells their story through two hundred unique period photographs, many of which have never been published before.
