Description

The year 1864, in which seven detective stories set in Prague take place, is nothing extraordinary. It is closer to the now somewhat dusty times of the Czech national revival than to the era when the 'new world' began to take shape with its grand buildings, wide illuminated boulevards, and boundless faith in technological progress...
But even in the seemingly calm year of 1864, crime is thriving in Prague. The investigations are overseen by judges, one of whom is Councillor Jindřich Hronek. Because he holds a significant and well-paid position at the regional criminal court, his family belongs to the social elite. The Hronks have rented a large apartment in the Old Town and, unlike most residents of Prague, they do not struggle with poverty. They can afford to send their son Hansi to study law in Vienna and provide their sharp daughter Eliška with at least a limited education at a German girls' high school.
Eliška Hronková... She will be our main focus. This only seventeen-year-old girl has an exceptional talent for investigating crimes. Had she been born a man, she might have had a career in public service ahead of her. But now, all that is expected of her is to marry well one day and fulfill the role of a model wife and housekeeper. Fortunately, Eliška is smart and stubborn enough to pursue her ambitions as an investigator...
