Description
This Czech-language noir detective novel with carefully developed psychology takes readers to a time when people used only candles and oil lamps, and to a Ukrainian rural estate in the settlement of White Ash. Each night, the estate is covered by a layer of pale dust, which the locals associate with a nearby entrance to hell. The estate’s owner asks detective Taras Bilyi to investigate the murder of his daughter. As the investigation progresses, many things fail to add up, the villagers behave suspiciously and everyone is bound by fear of a mythical demon, protecting themselves by painting mysterious white circles. Folklore motifs and elements of magical realism blend with the detective plot and unexpected twists. The enigmatic detective, who cannot remember half of his life, introduces a question about the boundary between good and evil into an environment filled with rituals and occultism, a boundary that for certain reasons seems to have shifted in White Ash.
