Description

This Czech-language psychological crime novel with mysterious elements opens in the French port city of Nantes, shrouded in dense fog and the dim glow of gas street lamps, where a lifeless woman’s body floats in a filled bathtub. Its oppressive noir atmosphere, precisely constructed plot and unexpected, even shocking conclusion centre on Ravinel, a morally wavering merchant whose marriage to the respectable Mireille is disrupted when the determined doctor Lucienne enters their lives. Ravinel’s previously dull existence gradually turns into a nightmare in which the boundary between reality and illusion is fatally blurred. In 1955, the novel was adapted for film by Henri-Georges Clouzot under the title The Diabolical Women.
