Description
The novel is set during the great Ukrainian famine of 1932 and 1933. The story is narrated through three characters – Dusja, Svyryd, and Solja – whose seemingly contradictory fates gradually intertwine and escalate alongside the intensifying famine. In addition to the three main characters' storylines, the author also outlines the contrast between the dying traditional village and the oppressive Soviet system. The embodiment of hunger as an allegorical figure that devours everything around it powerfully captures the shocking and often horrific everyday reality of the time. Thus, the novel offers an authentic insight into the situation of the famine along with a readable story of characters based on real-life prototypes. The epilogue by Ukrainianist Tereza Chlaňová provides Czech readers with a deeper understanding of this tragic part of Ukrainian history.
