Some of them (The Prayer of the Tsar's Nurse, About the Marketeer, The Case of the Well-Locked Room) are new, while others are nearly forgotten and appear in this book in revised form after many years (The Pigeon Killer, The Eve of the Seance, The Case of the Inappropriately Placed Chance). The last story, The Devil's Hoof, deals with the fates of writers during normalization and after the fall of the Iron Curtain.
