Vzpomínky jednoho disidenta – Malý Ladislav (2024)

I lived through the entire period of communism in Czechoslovakia. It was an ugly time; the time of my youth, which I try to depict somewhat clumsily, stylizing myself into the character of Krištof - Krištof is my literary alter ego. I attempt to portray the past as I truly experienced it and how it affected and influenced not only my character but the character of all of us; it was a time that engulfed us all with its unkindness, clouded our minds, and hardened our hearts. I describe my life journey of spiritual growth and finding the right path leading to God. My life is certainly not that of an intellectual, but rather that of an ordinary person, an orphan, plagued by illnesses, a worker, a lifelong student, a believing Catholic who recognized the communist lie and became a dissident. A dissident is anyone, whether an intellectual or a worker, who does not want to tarnish their conscience by agreeing with this power in a totalitarian regime. My Memories are also for those who still invoke communism with their words and whose hearts are full of bitterness and life disappointment. My Memories about life in a totalitarian regime are also for those who are lost in their lives, or for those who are willing to sing for a piece of bread to their benefactors.
