The human ear always eagerly listens to stories about unknown things, especially those that have happened in distant and diverse lands, as people usually describe them for the pleasure and refreshment of the reader's mind. For these reasons, this book was also written. It particularly discusses how princes and other men of noble and illustrious lineage, traveling through various places on land and sea, find themselves in many hardships and mortal dangers, known to anyone who has experienced something like that. People venture into such dangers for these reasons: some certainly out of a desire for glory, to thereby enhance the sound of their good name and achieve a safer knowledge of knightly ways, others out of piety, to see sacred places, relics, and the graves of saints, and others for both of these reasons. However, Almighty God protects His faithful in such dangers and, according to His will, preserves them and returns them safely and without harm to their homeland.
