You are holding a reprint of a nearly one hundred-year-old edition of the work "Pogrom Against Ukrainians in Poland," which I happened to come across while searching for the works of a Ukrainian patriotic writer who lived in Czechoslovakia. When I studied the document, I not only supplemented my already known facts about the problematic coexistence of Poles and Ukrainians during the rule of Poland's de facto dictator and General Józef Piłsudski in the Second Polish Republic, but I also learned new facts that illustrate the complex, often brutally violent genesis of the relationship between Poles and Ukrainians. While we can read in many books in Czech about the crimes committed by Ukrainian nationalists against Poles, Czechs, Rusyns, Jews, etc., we practically find no mention of the brutal violence from the other side – from Polish nationalists and the Polish state. Therefore, I decided to republish this work to highlight not only this unknown topic of Ukrainian-Polish history for the Czech reader but also to remind us of where extreme nationalism and the unwillingness to tolerate the different culture of one's neighbors can lead.
