Description
Rudolf Dvořák is among the leading experts on Islam in the Czech lands at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. He is considered by Czech historians to be the founder of Czech Oriental studies, and it is sad that he has been forgotten in our society today. Perhaps this is partly due to the fact that some of Professor Dvořák's work was published only in German, and also because many of his opinions and conclusions do not fit into the current multicultural interpretation of the significance of Islam and its influence on Europe, where he pointed out the fundamental importance of orthodox Islam for the decline of Arab-Muslim civilization, stating, for example, that "if science truly flourished among the Arabs, it was due to foreign influence and only in times when original Islam had at least for some individuals lost its strictness, and freedom of thought prevailed to a somewhat greater extent." In this publication, Professor Dvořák addresses the inspirational and positive influence of Muslim civilization on European civilization. There is no doubt that such views are considered politically incorrect in today's European Oriental studies and do not align with the spirit of multicultural interpretations of Islam and its civilization.
