This travel book recounts Jitka Zadražilová’s experiences around the world, from a mini-tornado on the Andean plateau 4,000 metres above sea level and a view of the Taj Mahal’s minarets at sunset to weaving between mogotes in Cuba’s “tobacco heartland” and counting the steps to the top of the iconic Kukulkán pyramid in the Mayan city of Chichén Itzá. All of this can be managed independently, without a travel agency and often without knowing the language: a taxi driver in China understands where to take you when you draw an aeroplane. In much of Latin America, English is of little use, while paradoxically, even the “language of the greatest enemy” can be used in Cuba. These and other experiences, sometimes adrenaline-filled, are brought together in this book. How can you argue in Chinese when you do not speak it?
