This interdisciplinary scholarly monograph, in Czech, challenges the somewhat stagnant use of the term naturalism and encourages a more open-minded, unbiased approach. Its chapters reveal significant differences between the period’s understanding of naturalism, later interpretations and contemporary views. In response to literary, visual-art and musical material, the book reassesses the concept, examining its many variations, changing meanings and gradual emptying of meaning. From the perspective presented here, Czech naturalism, alongside French, Italian and Polish naturalism, emerges as a dynamic and multifaceted event in the history of national art and culture, intersecting with competing discourses.
