North and South Korea: different countries and distinct civilizations. In the short story collection "Fallen Green Leaves," we follow the fates of refugees from North Korea who are trying to find their way in the conflict of different worlds. The chasm is fatal. The author Kim Jugjong, originally from North Korea, authentically depicts their situation before and especially after their escape. Two sisters meet after ten years: the one who stayed in the North cannot understand the one who fled to the South. A different world and the "wind of freedom" are foreign to her (Red Stigma). An emigrant from North Korea, in desperation, uses her Chinese husband as a "transit station" on her way to South Korea (Mr. Changchen's Wife). A young girl tries to escape from the clutches of human traffickers (Sorry, Doctor). The stories of people yearning for freedom reveal the darkness of the North Korean regime. The author Kim Jugjong was born in North Korea and now lives in South Korea. In nine short stories, she credibly portrays the cultural clash between the North and the South, hinting at what might happen after the unification of both Koreas.
