Description
The writer Lee Chiao, whose real name is Li Nengchi, was born in 1934 in northern Taiwan in Miaoli County to a Hakka family. After studying pedagogy, he taught for many years at elementary and secondary schools. In the past, he also served as the editor-in-chief of the literary magazine Taiwanese Literature and Arts, as the chairman of the Taiwanese PEN club, and as an advisor to President Chen Shuibien. He is currently a member of the committee for cultural affairs of the Hakka nationality. Lee Chiao is the author of more than two hundred short stories and several novels, the most famous of which is the trilogy Cold Night. In addition to fiction, he has published ten volumes of cultural and literary-critical studies, as well as poetry, plays, and a biography. In the Czech Republic, the first translation of his short story was published in 2006 in the anthology The Taste of Apples. He has received numerous awards for his work.
