Description
The collection Matchbox offers insight into the poetic and artistic work of Lo Ch'ing (born 1948), one of the most prominent contemporary Taiwanese artists. The poems and paintings that Lo Ch'ing created during the 1990s are interconnected in the collection to form a multi-layered structure in which verse and image enter into a fresh and inspiring dialogue. Lo Ch'ing transcends the conventions of traditional Chinese aesthetics and connects the aesthetic principles of East and West. His work is characterized by playfulness and exaggeration, yet it does not lack intellectual depth and semantic openness. Lo Ch'ing creatively engages with both Chinese tradition and Western modernist approaches, addressing universal questions about the human condition in the world and self-knowledge. Lo Ch'ing, a poet, painter, and art theorist, has repeatedly stayed in the Czech Republic. He has a warm relationship with our country, and Prague has become a source of creative inspiration for him. From 2001 to 2015, as an erudite connoisseur of both Chinese and Western culture, he gave numerous presentations and lectures at Czech universities, schools, and cultural institutions (Charles University, Anglo-American University, the Municipal Library in Prague).
