Svoboda (1860–1943), a native of Mníšek pod Brdy, we will primarily visit the forests and villages of Brdy, mostly at night, in moments when ghosts, devils, forest goblins, and fairies appear in remote places, when the specters of soldiers from ancient battles hover over the meadows, when a cart with a water sprite rattles down a country road, and when the gardener Janatka or Anna Kroupová, the widow of the gamekeeper, shares her strange tales, having been close to the mysterious owl Poup, who carried the soul of the forest... The book was compiled and introduced by Petr Boček. It is intended for all literary adventurers and seekers of dark curiosities who wish to familiarize themselves with a prominent representative of old Czech rural Gothic and his impressively written works, which were last published in print often more than a hundred years ago.
