Cosi z hloubi – Joshi S. T. (2022)

In the novel Something from the Depths, Alison Mannering returns to her hometown, a remote mining community in northeastern Pennsylvania, after college to try to uncover the mystery surrounding her father's death. For reasons she cannot understand, her mother refuses to provide details about the tragedy, leaving Alison to embark on an investigation partly on her own and partly with the help of her former high school boyfriend. This search soon dramatically challenges all her previous knowledge of her familiar hometown, closely tied to a coal mine owned by the enigmatic Conrad Brashear. The investigation, conducted in the sleepy town with rather unconventional methods, quickly brings young Alison into contact with something that defies human imagination... The longest story in this book is complemented by shorter texts in which S. T. Joshi applies his rich knowledge of the weird fiction genre, Lovecraftian locations, and entities in an adventurous, detective, and provocatively speculative spirit. Among other things, we will visit Enlightenment-era France and also the English version of the ghostly Innsmouth.
