On the first morning of November 1755, Countess Dores da Pena arrives in secular Lisbon, the last descendant of a once powerful lineage. Dores is young and beautiful, but she knows her time in this world is running out. Each day she feels her strength waning, and she has come to terms with the fact that she is dying. Like the other pilgrims pushing through the thousands of streets of Lisbon, she has come to pray.
