Description

This Czech-language nonfiction book follows three former students of the grammar school in Velké Meziříčí who meet in July 1940 at a Czechoslovak military camp in Cholmondeley near Chester. They soon become among the first members of the 311th Czechoslovak Bomber Squadron in Britain and promise that whoever survives what lies ahead will send greetings home. After the war, Flight Lieutenant František M. Doležal fulfils the promise made by the three friends. From the squadron's last base at Tain in Scotland, two letters are sent: one reports that Pilot Officer Leonard Smrček, wireless operator of Wellington Mk.IC T2990 (KX-T), has been missing since the raid on Bremen on 23 June 1941; the other announces that Flying Officer Karel Novotný, pilot of Liberator GR.Mk.V BZ717 (L), dies on 19 July 1944 while returning from an anti-submarine patrol, when the aircraft crashes into a hill in fog at Marlborough Village near Bold Head airfield in Devon. Jiří Rajlich and Karel Černý dedicate this book to the lives of these three airmen and six of their comrades from the 311th Czechoslovak RAF Bomber Squadron: Flight Lieutenant Zdeněk Procházka, Sergeant Stanislav Rouš, Sergeant Alois Mezník, Sergeant František Horký, Pilot Officer Karel Rybníček and Flight Lieutenant Jaroslav Doležal.
