Whether as surprising variants of real historical events, as Róbert Hric does in the gripping The Only Alternative, or as a poetic glimpse into a post-apocalyptic future in The Forbidden Word by Bohumil Matějovský, or it can be portrayed as a personal alternative history, as brilliantly demonstrated by Anežka Melounová Křístková in the story Who Sits on Two Chairs. Alternative history also serves excellently as a starting point for reflection on current social issues: the satire The Right Life by Adam Suchý absurdly pushes political correctness to its limits, while the journalistically stark Gálí by Václav Dvořáček depicts the tragic outcome of demographic changes in Europe in the near future. History is simply not just history, which most authors of the winning works have successfully utilized.
