Zločin a trest – Dostojevskij Fjodor Michajlovič (2022)

A richly illustrated edition of a cornerstone work of world literature and the most famous detective novel of all time, in which the author uncovers the darkest corners and folds of a murderer's soul, a poor law student from St. Petersburg who conceived, planned, and committed the murder of an old pawnbroker, not out of purely selfish motives or in a fit of rage, but out of conviction, a sense of superiority, and intellectual pride, is complemented by more than seventy original paintings and drawings by the renowned English painter and illustrator Dave McKean. Dostoevsky began writing his great gripping drama about crime, the struggle between good and evil, conscience, punishment, redemption, and also about Russia and the Russian soul in 1865 abroad shortly after the death of his first wife and brother, when he found himself in financial distress. The novel was first published in installments in the magazine Russkij vestnik, and in 1866 it was published in book form. It was first published in Czech in 1883, translated by Josef Penížek, and in later years it was translated a total of five more times.
