The reader delves into the harsh wilderness of Indian territory alongside the heroes, including fourteen-year-old Benjamin Gilbert, where they must adapt to the needs, traditions, and customs of the Seneca tribe. The saga of the Gilbert family, Quakers from Pennsylvania, who were kidnapped by a band of Iroquois into the forests south of Lake Ontario. This happened after 1780, a year after General Sullivan's troops destroyed their land on Washington's orders. The book—a historical tale—describes the life of captives in the villages of the Seneca tribe along the Genesee River and at Lake Erie, who gradually make their way back to civilization through the British fort Niagara. However, young Benjamin Gilbert finds favor among the Indians, as he becomes the stepson of a prominent chief. Ben continues westward with a band of Caughnawagas and experiences his adventures in the legendary homeland of the now-extinct Attawandaron tribe.
