Description

This Czech-language book explores the Moravian Karst, a region known mainly for its caves and the famous Macocha Abyss, together with the legends, historical reports and stories connected with them. It traces the history of discoveries and the modern caving and exploration folklore that developed through encounters between research groups of different nationalities and interests, while also considering older traditions involving medieval castles, robber knights, torture chambers and vanished villages. The book discusses present-day attractions and tourist destinations, as well as lesser-known episodes, including plans for a park similar to the area between Lednice and Valtice, painted skulls discovered in the crypt beneath the pilgrimage church in Křtiny, and one of the most horrifying murders to take place in the region. Formerly known until the beginning of the 20th century as Moravian Switzerland, the Moravian Karst has much more to offer than caves, even though they remain its main attraction.
