Tajemné stezky - Šumavská toulání, slzy stožecké Madony – Pulkrábek Jaroslav (2020)

Hardly can we find another piece of land so filled with stories. Every hill or valley, every bend in the road, ford or bridge over a stream, every solitude and village, tells a story. About betrayal and love, cowardice and courage, cruelty and mercy. About seemingly mundane things and supernatural phenomena. At every step, a new page of the book of destinies opens up. One might be afraid to tread, lest they dishonor the place where a life was born or extinguished, where a memorable event took place. Although it is barely forty kilometers from one end to the other and can be crossed in a single day, getting to know it takes months and years. And those who search carefully may not finish in their entire lifetime. Jaroslav Pulkrábek, in his next book from the series 'Šumavská toulání', will take us to the Volary region. We will explore the area around Mount Stožec with its pilgrimage chapel, visit Volary, Soumarský Most, České Žleby, Stožec, Želnavu, and many other interesting places. We will remember the victims of the death marches that passed through Šumava at the end of the war, as well as Charles Havlat from Nebraska, who was the last American soldier to fall on our territory. We will encounter silent witnesses of often unbelievable stories, as well as current local residents who, while they remember much, prefer to shift the conversation when you ask them a question.
