Description
Nymburk writer, journalist, and expert on the Central Elbe region Jan Řehounek has this time diverted from the Elbe to its tributary the Výrovka, to introduce readers to a touristically almost undiscovered piece of land, commonly known as Českobrodsko. However, since it is an area enclosed by the rivers Výrovka and Šembera, it is referred to as Pošembeří. It starts just beyond the outskirts of Greater Prague at the borders of Úvaly, in Vyšehořovice, Tuklaty, and Škvorec. To the north, it is bordered by the D11 highway, and to the south by the road from Mukařov to Zásmuky. To the east, it stretches almost to Kolín. There are no large urban agglomerations here; the largest towns are Český Brod, Kostelec nad Černými lesy, Kouřim, and Pečky. However, Pošembeří abounds in beautiful nature and historical monuments. Notable are the urban heritage centers of the aforementioned towns, the open-air museum in Kouřim, the churches in Plaňany, or the Lipany battlefield... Yet few know about the collection of Gothic monuments in Vyšehořovice, the castle in Škvorec, the Romanesque basilica in Tismicích, the birthplace of Saint Procopius in Chotouň, and the Devil's Furrow stretching from there, the fortresses in Tuchoraz and Hradenín, the Marcomannic archaeological sites near Dobřichov, the Baroque malt house in Kounice, the Jewish cemetery in Přistoupim... Among the natural beauties, the hill Klepec near... is worth a visit.
